Last weekend five thousand endurance athletes were in nearby Lake Placid, NY to test themselves, test their own limits by competing in Ironman Lake Placid.
In case you’re not familiar with an Ironman triathlon, it is a race where the competitors swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles, and then run 26.2 miles…. back-to-back-to-back with a very quick transition between each.
I had the honor and pleasure to work in the swim-to-bike transition where volunteers handed off bikes to the athletes as they were ready to head off on their 112 mile ride.
I was the announcer, microphone in hand, shouting out numbers as quickly as I could, when the masses came all at the same time there was no keeping up.
Somewhere in the chaos of the thousands of athletes it occurred to me that I had the opportunity to help pump everyone, athletes and volunteers alike, up.
I started improvising funny comments, shouting out extra encouragement, in between calling off numbers.
On the bike course, which was extremely hilly with almost 7,000 feet of elevation gain, I would shout out “this is just a rumor, but I heard they managed to flatten the bike course overnight, it’s going to be a PR ride for sure today…get out there and kill that ride!”. It sounds silly to us maybe, but to some of these triathletes, it was a quick moment to chuckle in the middle of a 10-12 hour endurance day.
What are you doing, in your business, to inject your personality, your sense of humor, your authentic self, into what you do?
The single biggest differentiators that you have that separates you from all the masses in your business or industry is YOU.
Be yourself, don’t try to be some perfect model of what you think you should be. Show “the worts” any everything. In our industry, that is the new “attractive”. Afterall, you are using the principles of attraction marketing, aren’t you?

PS – Thank you to everyone that took the time to connect with me and inquire about why it’s been so long since I’ve emailed. I’ll just say that I needed a “sabbatical” and that all those Ironmen and Ironwomen kicked my tail back into action….and it’s good to be back. Thanks again!
Have an AWESOME day!
